Here at True North Games we are very excited for the arrival of Star Wars: Armada. Ever since we saw this game demoed at Gencon 2014, we knew that it was going to become one of our favorites. There is nothing more exciting than seeing Star Destroyers ponderously moving across a table while fighter squadrons wheel and maneuver around them. Last night we had a chance to try out this game for the first time and it did not disappoint.
We started with the Learn to Play Scenario, which does a good job of running players through the basic game rules. It also uses all of the ships and fighters that come in the core set (although, no upgrade cards) so it also allows players to try out all of their new toys. Two things that we learned very quickly were that maneuvering your capital ships was very important and that Star Destroyers (even Victory-class ones) can hit really hard. The Nebulon-B Escort Frigate went down on turn two to a particularly ferocious barrage from the Victory-II’s front battery. The rebels managed to claw their way back into the game by taking out the Victory-II’s fighter escort but in the end it wasn’t enough.
Overall, the game makes you feel like you are part of a fleet action. We’re looking forward to playing more games and combining the components of two core sets for a larger game.
